All kinds of fish eat different kinds of fish food. There are a lot of different kinds of fish food on the market, but some are better than others.
Different types of fish food:
- Flakes
- Pellets
- Frozen
- Fresh
- Live
There are other types of food, but these are the basics. I will go over the more advanced food types later.
Like I said, every kind of fish eats different kinds of food. Here’s a quick and easy listing of what fish eat.
What to feed goldfish:
Goldfish aren’t picky eaters. I suggest frozen food first, and then flake as second best. Goldfish may also eat pellets but I generally don’t recommend pellet fish food because it sinks to the bottom and may make your water cloudy.
What to feed catfish and bottom feeders:
Catfish and bottom feeders eat just about as anything and pellets are marketed towards these kinds of fish. While pellets are alright, I suggest you feed frozen first and foremost. Bloodworms and tubifex worms are favorites. While feeding these guys, you can use a turkey baster to squeeze some worms down to the bottom of the tank so that the other fish don’t steal them all. Some catfish, like Plecostomus also enjoy some vegetation. Lettuce or zucchini are often scarfed down as a treat.
What to feed cichlids:
Cichlids are voracious eaters and I suggest frozen bloodworms for them. If they are large enough to eat rosy reds or feeder goldfish, those are good too. I suggest you only feed live food as a treat as the frozen food is much healthier for a cichlid.
What to feed community fish:
Schooling fish and other community fish such as mollies or platys will eat tropical flake food or frozen food. I always suggest frozen food such as bloodworms first, but you will find that these fish will be happy and healthy eating plain old flake food.
How much do I feed my fish?
Not much!
The number one mistake people make is overfeeding their fish. Overfeeding can downright destroy an aquarium. I suggest only feeding once a day, and only enough that the fish will eat in 4-5 minutes. Extra food should be removed with a small net or it could cause cloudy aquarium water and poor water conditions that could harm your fish. Not only that, fish that eat too much are prone to illness and are just generally unhealthy. Just like a person!
